Whenever people work together, conflicts are bound to arise. When an argument breaks out in your department, are you tempted to join in or take one side? Instead, why not become a mediator or peacemaker? Successful mediation begins with trust. No one wants to listen to someone who lacks fairness and integrity. If you step into a conflict to mediate, you need to gather the facts about the situation. Ask questions that help bring out the facts clearly. There are always two sides to every story, and each side may distort the truth a little. If you can help the people involved consider each other’s point of view, you can often find a compromise that leads to agreement. When you help them reach an understanding based on mutual respect, you will earn a strong reputation as a trustworthy mediator.

“Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear.” (Proverbs 25:12, ESV)
