대부분의 사람들은 자신의 가치를 일터에서의 ‘성과’로 판단합니다. 성사된 계약, 완료한 프로젝트, 비워낸 이메일함. 우리는 수치와 마감 일정 속에서 살아가며, 어느 순간부터 모든 것이 우리 자신에게 달려 있다고 믿기 시작합니다. 내가 움직이지 않으면 일이 멈추고, 내가 성과를 만들어내지 않으면 아무것도 이루어지지 않는다고 생각합니다.
Most professionals measure their worth by output. Deals closed. Projects shipped. Inboxes emptied. We live inside metrics and deadlines, and somewhere along the way, we start to believe everything depends on us. If we do not show up, the whole thing stalls. If we do not produce, nothing moves.
그런 생각은 일터에만 머물지 않습니다. 우리의 신앙 안으로도 스며듭니다. 우리는 하나님의 일이 우리의 노력과 능력, 그리고 짐을 감당하려는 의지에 달려 있다고 여기기 시작합니다. 그러다 보면 부르심은 압박으로 느껴지고, 순종은 무거운 짐처럼 느껴집니다. 일터에서든 교회에서든, 섬김은 기쁨이 아닌 노동처럼 느껴집니다.
That lie does not stay at the office. It creeps into our faith. We start thinking God’s work in the world depends on our effort, our competence, and our willingness to carry the load. Calling begins to feel like pressure. Obedience begins to feel like weight. Service, at the desk or in the sanctuary, starts to feel like strain.
그러나 요한복음 21장은 전혀 다른 이야기를 들려줍니다. 부활하신 예수님께서 제자들에게 나타나셨을 때, 제자들은 밤새도록 고기를 잡았지만 아무것도 얻지 못했습니다. 날이 밝아올 무렵 예수님께서 해변에서 “너희에게 고기가 있느냐?”고 물으셨고, 제자들은 없다고 대답했습니다. 그러자 예수님은 그물을 배 오른편에 던지라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그들이 순종하자 그물은 감당하기 어려울 만큼 많은 물고기로 가득 찼습니다. 마침내 그들의 수고가 결실을 맺은 것처럼 보였습니다. 그러나 그들이 해변에 도착했을 때 이미 숯불이 피워져 있었고, 생선은 구워지고 있었으며, 빵도 준비되어 있었습니다. 이미 아침 식사가 마련되어 있었던 것입니다. 그리고 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
요한복음 21:10
“예수께서 이르시되 지금 잡은 생선을 좀 가져오라 하시니”
John 21 tells a different story. After the resurrection, the disciples fished all night and caught nothing. At dawn, Jesus called out from the shore and asked if they had anything. They said no. He told them to throw the net on the other side of the boat. They obeyed, and the net came up so heavy they could barely haul it in. For a moment, it looked like their labor had finally paid off. Then they reached the beach. Jesus already had a charcoal fire burning. Fish were already cooking. Bread was already waiting. Breakfast was already underway. And then He said: “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught” (John 21:10).
이 장면을 잘 생각해 보십시오. 아침 식사는 제자들이 잡은 물고기에 달려 있지 않았습니다. 그럼에도 예수님은 그들의 몫을 가져오라고 하셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들을 먹이기 위해 그들의 물고기가 필요한 것이 아니었습니다. 예수님은 이미 필요한 모든 것을 준비해 두셨습니다. 하지만 그분은 제자들이 가져온 것을 기꺼이 받아주셨습니다. 제자들의 수고가 공급을 만들어낸 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 그들의 수고는 이미 준비된 공급에 참여하게 한 것이었습니다. 기적은 그들이 예수님께 부족했던 무언가를 건넨 데 있는 것이 아닙니다. 기적은 그분이 그들을 참여하게 하셨다는 사실 그 자체에 있습니다.
Catch that. The meal did not depend on their catch. He still wanted their contribution. Christ did not need their fish to feed them. He had already provided what was necessary. But He welcomed what they brought. Their labor did not create the provision. It connected them to it. The miracle was not that they handed Jesus something He was missing. The miracle was that He let them participate at all.
이 사실은 우리가 일을 바라보는 관점을 바꾸어 줍니다. 하나님은 자신의 뜻을 이루기 위해 우리의 생산성을 필요로 하시는 분이 아닙니다. 우리의 성과가 부족하다고 해서 하나님의 계획이 제한되는 것도 아닙니다. 우리의 직업과 영향력, 그리고 증거하는 삶은 하나님께서 필사적으로 필요로 하시는 도구가 아닙니다. 그것은 하나님께서 은혜로 우리에게 주시는 선물입니다. 하나님께서 이미 이 세상 가운데 행하고 계신 일에 우리를 동역자로 초대하신 것입니다.
That changes how we understand our work. God does not need our productivity to accomplish His purposes. He is not limited by our performance. He is not leaning on our competence to act. Our jobs, our influence, our witness are not tools He desperately requires. They are gifts He graciously gives. An invitation into collaboration with what He is already doing in the world.
이 사실은 우리의 일하는 태도를 완전히 바꾸어 놓습니다. 우리는 세상이 우리 없이 무너질까봐 일하는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 우리를 그분의 일에 참여하도록 선택하셨기 때문에 일하는 것입니다. 우리는 자신의 가치를 증명하기 위해 수고하는 것이 아닙니다. 이미 부르심을 받았기 때문에 수고하는 것입니다. 하나님께서 우리의 목소리 없이는 아무것도 하실 수 없기 때문에 그리스도를 증거하는 것도 아닙니다. 하나님께서 인간의 순종을 통해 자신의 뜻을 이루어 가시는 것을 기뻐하시기 때문입니다.
That changes the tone of our work. We do not show up because the world will fall apart without us, but because God has chosen to involve us. We do not labor to prove our worth. We labor because we have already been called. We do not witness for Christ because God is helpless without our voice. We witness because He delights to use human obedience in divine purposes.
골로새서 3:23
“무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라”
이 말씀은 부담에 대한 명령이 아니라, 특권에 대한 부르심입니다. 우리의 일상적인 업무들은 단순한 생계수단이 아니라 하나님의 일에 참여하는 과정입니다. 문제는 우리가 이 사실을 잊고, 하나님의 동역 초청을 개인적인 짐으로 바꾸어버린다는 데 있습니다. 그렇게 되면 감사함으로 받아야 할 일을 원망하게 되고, 순종을 특권이 아닌 의무처럼 여기게 됩니다. 하나님께서 우리를 초대하셨다는 사실보다, 마치 하나님이 우리를 필요로 하시는 것처럼 살아가게 되는 것입니다.
Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” That is a call to privilege, not pressure. Your daily work is not just employment, but participation. The danger is forgetting that and turning divine collaboration into a personal burden. When that happens, we resent what should be received with gratitude and treat obedience as an obligation instead of an opportunity. We live as if God depends on us rather than remembering that He has invited us.
부활하신 예수님은 제자들에게 아침 식사를 준비하라고 요구하지 않으셨습니다. 다만 그들이 잡은 것을 가져와 함께 식탁에 참여하라고 하셨습니다. 우리가 초대받은 존재라는 사실을 잊고, 스스로 없어서는 안 될 존재라고 착각하지 않기를 바랍니다. 또한 하나님의 부르심을 경이로움이 아닌 짐으로 여기지 않기를 바랍니다. 일터에서 그리스도와 함께 수고한다는 것은 억지로 견뎌내야 할 일이 아니라, 감사함으로 누려야 할 특권입니다.
The risen Christ did not ask the disciples to provide the meal. He asked them to bring what they had caught and join Him at the fire. May we never confuse being invited with being indispensable. May we never treat calling as weight instead of wonder. To labor with Christ in the marketplace is not something we endure. It is something we are honored to receive.

Today’s marketplace, perhaps more than ever, needs the active presence of men and women willing to serve as what the apostle Paul called “Christ’s ambassadors” (2 Corinthians 5:20). What difference does it make to realize the Lord is not dependent on our productivity to accomplish His purposes, and that He instead invites us to participate, to collaborate with Him in what He is doing?

막대기와 돌뿐 아니라 말도 상처를 준다

어린 시절 사람들은 종종 이런 말을 하곤 했습니다. “막대기와 돌은 내 뼈를 부러뜨릴 수 있어도, 말은 나를 상하게 할 수 없다.” 얼핏 들으면 맞는 말처럼 보입니다. 막대기와 돌은 실제로 신체에 상처를 입힐 수 있기 때문입니다. 그러나 살아오면서 저는 깨달았습니다. 말 또한 사람에게 깊은 상처를 줄 수 있다는 사실을 말입니다. 다만 그 상처는 육체가 아니라 감정과 정신에 남게 됩니다.
When I was a boy, people would repeat the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” That sounded correct, since sticks and stones can certainly inflict physical damage. However, life has taught me that words can be just as hurtful; they just affect us emotionally and mentally.
이를 가장 잘 보여주는 사례 가운데 하나가 바로 오늘날 심각한 사회문제가 된 ‘사이버 폭력(cyberbullying)’입니다. 특히 어린이와 청소년들이 SNS, 문자메시지, 이메일 등을 통해 악의적인 언어폭력의 대상이 되고 있습니다. 안타깝게도, 이러한 취약한 어린이와 청소년 중 너무 많은 이들이 그 결과로 큰 고통을 겪었고, 심지어 스스로 생을 마감하는 경우까지 발생하고 있습니다.
There is no greater evidence of this than with the development and escalation of what has been called, “cyberbullying.” Individuals, especially young people, being targeted on social media, text messages and emails with vicious verbal attacks. Sadly, too many of these vulnerable children and teenagers have suffered great distress as a consequence, sometimes resulting in suicide.

We would like to think this is not the case in the adult world, especially the marketplace, but we all know that is not true. In some settings, verbal abuse between superiors and subordinates, as well as between coworkers, is an everyday reality. Outbursts of anger, colleagues being demeaned in public, vindictive emails being sent, and the use of other forms of communication to disparage others are all too common.
대부분의 경우 이런 행동은 생산성을 떨어뜨릴 뿐 아니라, 최악의 경우 심각한 상처를 남기는 무기가 되기도 합니다. 아마도 이런 이유 때문에 성경은 말로 남을 해치는 행위에 대한 경고가 가득한 이유 중 하나일 것입니다. 구약과 신약 모두 말의 엄청난 힘과, 잘못 사용될 때 초래되는 잠재적 위험에 대해 강조합니다. 다음은 우리가 입으로 말하거나 글로 쓸 때 적용되는 몇 가지 예입니다:
In most cases, these are counterproductive at best, weapons for serious harm at worst. Perhaps this is one reason the Scriptures are replete with admonitions against the abuse of people with our words, whether uttered orally or presented in written form. Both the Old and New Testaments remind us of the incredible power and potential peril of the use and misuse words, especially when spoken. Here are some examples that apply to what we say aloud and in written form:

We dare not underestimate the incredible impact of things we say. We should choose our words wisely.

Just as a hammer can pound a nail into wood and also smash someone’s thumb, the tongue has the capacity to serve and benefit others, or to deliver harsh criticism and profane language.

우리의 선택과 통제 안에 있는 말

사격수가 목표를 조준하지 않은 채 총을 발사하지 않는 것처럼, 우리 역시 말이나 글이 어떤 영향을 미칠지를 생각하지 않는다면 그것은 쉽게 상처 주는 무기가 될 수 있습니다. 우리는 언제 말할지, 말하지 않을지, 무엇을 어떻게 말할지를 선택할 수 있는 능력을 가지고 있습니다.
Just as a marksman would not fire a rifle before taking proper aim, we would be wise to remember that if we do not calculate the impact of the words we speak or write, they can become weapons just as easily as means for communicating information, ideas and feelings. We have the ability to choose when to speak and when not to, as well as what to say and how it should be said.

With so much negativity in our world, a conscious effort to rein in our words, releasing them only when they will be of positive benefit to others, as well as ourselves, can set us apart where we work in positive ways.

Sometimes it is difficult to be objective in evaluating our flaws and weaknesses. 지속적인 훈련과 배움의 가치

제가 사회 초년생이었을 때, 교육과 훈련을 중요하게 여기는 회사들에서 일할 수 있었던 것은 큰 축복이었습니다. 회계법인에서 일하든 대형 은행에서 일하든, 저는 다양한 비즈니스 실무 교육에 참여할 기회를 얻었습니다. 그런 배움은 매우 유익하고 꼭 필요한 것이었지만, 때로는 일시적인 유행이나 단기적인 트렌드에 불과한 내용들도 포함되어 있었습니다. 어떤 아이디어들은 금세 잊혀졌고, 심지어 하나님의 지혜와 반대되는 경우도 있었습니다.
When I was a young professional, I was blessed to work for companies that valued training. Whether I worked for a CPA firm or a large bank, I was allowed to participate in various forms of training in business practices. The learning was valuable and needed, but at times it also included business fads – popular, short-term trends within the professions – that were of little value and soon forgotten. Sometimes these gimmicky ideas even ran counter to the wisdom of God.
왜 이것이 중요할까요? 비즈니스 현장을 이끄는 아이디어와 철학은 시대와 기술의 변화에 따라 변할 수 있기 때문입니다. 그러나 하나님께서 성경을 통해 보여주시는 진리와 원칙은 시대를 초월하며 변하지 않습니다. 이는 특히 윤리와 가치관, 그리고 사람과의 관계, 하나님과의 관계에 있어서는 더욱 그렇습니다.
Why did this matter? Because ideas and philosophies that guide business practices may change with the times as well as with technology. However, the truths and principles the Lord presents in the Scriptures are timeless and not subject to the winds of change. This is especially true in terms of ethics, values, and our relationships with each other – and with God.
구약성경에서 하나님은 선지자 호세아를 통해 이렇게 말씀하십니다.
호세아 14:9
“누가 지혜가 있어 이런 일을 깨달으며 누가 총명이 있어 이런 일을 알겠느냐 여호와의 도는 정직하니 의인은 그 길로 다니거니와 그러나 죄인은 그 길에 걸려 넘어지리라”
In the Bible’s Old Testament, the Lord teaches through the prophet Hosea, “Who is wise? Let them realize these things. Who is discerning? Let them understand. The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them” (Hosea 14:9).
지식과 경험은 분명 유익하지만, 그것이 곧 지혜는 아닙니다. 신약성경은 이렇게 가르칩니다.
야고보서 1:5
“너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라”

Knowledge and experience are beneficial, but they are not the same as wisdom. In the New Testament we are instructed, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5). The ‘wisdom’ of the marketplace can change from day to day, but the timeless wisdom of God is unchanging and always reliable.
교육도 마찬가지입니다. 저는 일터 생활을 하면서 교육이 성장과 발전에 중요하다고 믿었습니다. 저는 업무를 더 잘 수행하고, 제 상사들에게 제가 일에 얼마나 헌신적인지 보여주기 위해 은행 관련 대학원에 진학하는 등 고등학위를 취득했습니다.
The same holds true for education. Throughout my career, I have believed education was important for my advancement. I pursued advanced degrees, including enrolling in a graduate school of banking, to do my job better and demonstrate to the executives to whom I reported how committed I was to my work.
예수 그리스도를 따르는 사람이 된 후에도 저는 같은 태도로 신앙을 추구했습니다. 성경 지식을 쌓기 위해 계속 읽고 공부했습니다. 하지만 단순히 더 똑똑해지려고 노력하는 데는 한계가 있다는 것을 곧 깨달았습니다. 사도 야고보는 이렇게 말했습니다.
야고보서 4:17
“그러므로 사람이 선을 행할 줄 알고도 행하지 아니하면 죄니라”
After becoming a follower of Jesus Christ, I pursued my faith in the same way, continually reading and studying to build my biblical knowledge. But I soon realized that simply trying to get smarter has its limits. As the apostle James wrote, “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and does not do it, it is sin for them” (James 4:17).
하나님의 말씀을 배우는 것은 중요합니다. 그러나 지식을 습득하는 데 그쳐서는 안 됩니다. 이는 단순히 정보를 축적하는 문제가 아닙니다. 우리가 아는 바를 실천에 옮길 때, 즉 매일 맡은 바 업무 책임을 다하며 믿음을 삶 속에서 살아내려고 노력할 때, 비로소 하나님을 가장 잘 섬기는 것입니다.
Learning God’s Word is important, but we cannot stop with acquiring knowledge. It is not merely a matter of accumulating information. We serve God best when we act upon what we know, putting it into practice – and that includes striving to live out our faith every day as we carry out our job responsibilities.
우리는 다음 말씀을 확신합니다.
디모데후서 3:16-17
“모든 성경은 하나님의 감동으로 된 것으로, 교훈과 책망과 바르게 함과 의로 교육하기에 유익하니 이는 하나님의 사람으로 온전하게 하며 모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추게 하려 함이라”
성경의 진리를 알고 삶과 일에 적용하는 것은 우리가 맡은 일을 바르게 하고 탁월하게 수행하는 데 큰 도움이 됩니다.
We have the assurance that, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Knowing and applying truth from the Scriptures enhances our ability to do our jobs well and in the right way.
여러분의 직종이 무엇이든, 그 분야에서 받는 실무적인 교육과 전문 훈련은 매우 가치가 있습니다. 그러나 성경을 통해 계시하신 하나님의 방법과 길에 따라 훈련받는 것은 우리의 비즈니스와 직업 세계에 훨씬 더 큰 영향을 줄 것입니다.
에베소서 2:10
“우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라”
Practical training and education in your profession, whatever it may be, can be very valuable. However, being trained in the ways of the Lord – as He has revealed them in the Scriptures – will enhance your business career to a far greater extent. As Ephesians 2:10 tells us, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
