여러분이 이제 막 일을 시작했든, 경력의 끝자락에 가까워지고 있든, 자신의 경력에 대해 어떤 비전을 가지고 있습니까? 평생의 일을 마쳤을 때 무엇을 이루었기를 바라는지 미리 요약해서 쓸 수 있다면, 그 안에는 어떤 내용을포함하겠습니까?
Whether you are just getting started or are nearing the conclusion of it, what is your vision for your career? If you could write an advance summary of what you hope to have accomplished when your lifetime of work has ended, what would it include?

우리 모두는 각기 다른 관점과 다양한 목표와 목적을 가지고 자신의 일과 경력을 대합니다. 어떤 사람들에게는 돈이 가장 중요한 목표입니다. 가능한 한 오랫동안, 가능한 한 많은 돈을 벌고 싶어 합니다. 비슷한 목표를 가진 사람들도 있습니다. 다만 이들은 편안하게 은퇴하고 자신이 정말 하고 싶은 일을 할 수 있을 만큼 충분한 돈을 벌고 저축하려고 합니다. 일터에서 가장 중요한 것은 그들이 일을 그만둘 수 있는 날입니다.
We all approach our jobs and careers with different perspectives, a diversity of goals and objectives. For some, money is the primary focus – wanting to earn as much as possible for as long as possible. Some hold a similar goal – except they intend to earn and save enough money to be able to retire comfortably and do what they really want to do. Their primary focus at work is the day they can stop working.

어떤 사람들은 회사에서 승진을 거듭하거나, 성공적인 사업을 시작하고 성장시키면서 전문적인 발전을 이루기 위해 노력합니다. 그들은 성공과 인정을 모두 원합니다. 반면 자신이 하는 일을 진심으로 즐기고 그 일에서 만족을 얻기 때문에 일하는 사람들도 있습니다. 그들은 전도서 5장 18절에서 저자가 말한 것을 경험하고 있는 것입니다. “사람이 하나님께서 그에게 주신 바 그 일평생에 먹고 마시며 해 아래에서 하는 모든 수고 중에서 낙을 보는 것이 선하고 아름다움을 내가 보았나니 그것이 그의 몫이로다.”
Some people strive for professional advancement, either by climbing the corporate ladder or by starting and building a successful entrepreneurial enterprise. They want both success and recognition. Then there are those who work because they genuinely enjoy and derive satisfaction from their vocations. They are experiencing what the author of Ecclesiastes 5:18 observed: “Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun…for this is his lot.”

여러분이 일에서 어떤 목표와 목적을 가지고 있든, 반드시 그것을 이루기 위한 계획을 가지고 추구하십시오. 그러나 여러분이 해 온 일에 대해 모든 것이 끝나고 나면, 무엇이 남을까요? 이것은 남성 문제에 관한 권위자로 널리 알려진 작가이자 강연자인 패트릭 몰리가 던진 질문입니다. 이번 주에 몇몇 자료를 살펴보다가, 몇 년 전 몰리가 소셜미디어에 올렸던 다음과 같은 글을 발견했습니다.

Whatever goals and objectives you have in your work, by all means pursue them with a plan for realizing them. However, when all has been said and done concerning the work you have performed, what will remain? This is a question that Patrick Morley has posed. He is an author and speaker who has gained prominence as an authority on men’s issues. I was going through some files this week when I came across the following observation Morley made some years ago on social media:
“This morning I was trying to remember the name of the enormously successful businessman and iconic philanthropist in Tampa, Florida who used to own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a professional football team. His name was constantly in the news. He was far more well-known that you or I will ever be, yet 10 years after the last time I heard his name, I cannot remember it. And there are many more just like him.”

저 역시 그 사람의 이름을 기억하지 못합니다. 그는 자신의 재정과 영향력을 통해 많은 선한 일을 했을지도 모르지만, 인기와 명성은 오래가지 않습니다. 인기 있는 연예인이든, 재능 있는 음악가이든, 저명한 CEO이든, 유명한 외과의사이든, 이름난 변호사이든, 뛰어난 운동선수이든, 결국 주목받는 시간은 끝이 나고 다른 누군가가 그 자리를 대신해 그들의 전성기를 누리게 됩니다. 그래서 몰리는 이런 질문을 던졌습니다. 여러분이 죽은 지 10년 후에도 누가 여러분의 이름을 기억할까요? 쉽게 답할 수 있는 질문은 아닐지 모르지만, 삶의 우선순위를 정하는 데 매우 훌륭한 질문입니다.
I do not remember the man’s name either. He may have done much good with his financial resources and influence, but popularity and fame are fleeting. Whether one is a popular entertainer, gifted musician, prominent CEO, celebrated surgeon, noted attorney, or gifted athlete, eventually their time in the spotlight will end and they will be replaced by someone else to enjoy their “day in the sun.” So, here is the question Morley posed: Who will remember your name 10 years after you die? This may not be easy to answer, but it is an excellent question to use for setting the priorities for your life!

하나님께서는 선지자 이사야를 통해 이스라엘 민족에게 회개를 촉구하셨습니다. 이스라엘 백성은 자주 목이 곧고 불순종했지만, 주님은 그들에게 하신 언약의 약속을 결코 잊지 않으셨습니다. 하나님께서는 선지자를 통해 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너는 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 구속하였고 내가 너를 지명하여 불렀나니 너는 내 것이라… 네가 내 눈에 보배롭고 존귀하며 내가 너를 사랑하였은즉 내가 네 대신 사람들을 내어 주며 백성들이 네 생명을 대신하리니” (이사야 43:1-4)
God used the prophet Isaiah to call the nation of Israel to repentance. Even though the Israelites were often stiff-necked and disobedient, the Lord never forgot His covenant promises to them. Through the prophet He said, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are Mine…. Since you are precious and honored in My sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you, and people in exchange for your life” (Isaiah 43:1-4).

첫째, 하나님께서 우리를 그분을 섬기고 그분의 영원한 목적에 참여하도록 부르셨다는 것을 절대 잊지 않는 것이 중요합니다. 둘째, 우리의 삶을 다른 사람들에게 쏟아붓는 것보다 더 가치 있는 투자는 없습니다. 그들에게 예수 그리스도를 소개하고 믿음 안에서 성장하도록 도와, 그들 또한 다른 사람들에게 전할 수 있게 하는 것입니다. 사도 바울은 그의 제자 디모데에게 이렇게 권면했습니다. “또 네가 많은 증인 앞에서 내게 들은 바를 충성된 사람들에게 부탁하라 그들이 또 다른 사람들을 가르칠 수 있으리라” (디모데후서 2:2)
First, it is important to never forget that God has called us to serve Him and participate in His eternal purposes. Second, there is no greater investment than to pour our lives into other people, introducing them to Jesus Christ and helping them to grow in their faith, so that they can tell others. As the apostle Paul exhorted his protégé Timothy, “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2).

많은 성공한 사업가와 전문직 종사자들은 이렇게 고백했습니다. “기업의 성공 사다리를 열심히 올라갔지만, 결국 그 사다리가 잘못된 벽에 기대어 있다는 것을 알게 되었다.” 다시 말해, 자신이 이루고자 했고 만족을 줄 것이라고 기대했던 것들이 실제로 기대했던 것과 달랐습니다.
Many successful business and professional people have admitted, “I climbed the corporate ladder – only to discover it was leaning against the wrong wall.” In other words, the things they had hoped to achieve and find fulfilling were not what they expected.
