Do You Think You Can Get Away with Deception?

어떤 사업가가 가끔 실수로 중복 결제를 받거나 더 많은 금액을 받은 것을 그대로 두어 추가 수입을 올리는 방법을 알게 되었다. 10년이 지난 후, 한 투자자가 수백만 달러를 들여 그 사업을 인수하겠다고 제안했다. 사업가는 평생 기다려온 기회라고 생각했다.

그러나 인수를 위한 실사(Due Diligence)가 진행되면서, 오랜 기간 이어진 부정한 거래 관행이 드러났다. 결국 사업 매각은 무산되었다.

사업가가 이유를 묻자, 투자자는 이렇게 말했다.

"당신이 그동안 고객에게 정직하지 않았다면, 이제 무엇을 더 믿을 수 있겠습니까? 우리는 더 이상 당신과 당신의 사업을 신뢰할 수 없습니다."

당신의 일터에서 정직하지 못한 행동은 언젠가 반드시 드러난다. 순간의 이익을 위해 신뢰를 잃는다면, 결국 훨씬 더 큰 기회를 잃게 된다. 사업의 가장 큰 자산은 돈이 아니라 신뢰이다. 정직은 지금도 변함없는 최고의 경영 원칙이다.

“충성된 자는 복이 많아도 속히 부하고자 하는 자는 형벌을 면치 못하리라.” (잠언 28:20)

A businessman discovered that when customers were accidentally charged twice or paid more than they owed, he quietly kept the extra money as additional income. Over the years, this dishonest practice became part of his business.

Ten years later, an investor offered several million dollars to purchase the company. The owner believed he had finally reached the opportunity of a lifetime.

However, during the due diligence process, the buyer uncovered years of unethical billing practices, and the acquisition was immediately canceled.

Surprised, the owner asked why the deal had fallen through. The investor replied,

"If you have not been honest with your customers, how can we trust anything else about your business? We can no longer place our confidence in you or your company."

Dishonesty in business may remain hidden for a time, but it will eventually be exposed. The effort spent trying to deceive others is never worth the cost. A small dishonest gain today can destroy a lifetime of credibility and cost opportunities far greater than the temporary profit.

The greatest asset of any business is not its revenue or products—it is trust. Integrity is the foundation of lasting success, and honesty remains the best business policy.
