THE BEAUTY OF JOY-FILLED WORK

나의 증조할아버지는 90대 중반까지 장수하셨다. 증조할아버지 웨이드(Wade)는 주로 지붕을 만드는 일을 하셨고, 농사도 조금씩 지으셨다. 그는 열심히 일하는 것을 사랑했고, 삶을 즐길 줄 아는 분이었다. 증조할아버지가 89세였을 때의 일이 아직도 기억난다. 그는 눈을 반짝이며 내게 몸을 기울여 작은 목소리로 말씀하셨다. "부모님께는 말하지 마라. 어제 모퉁이에 있는 교회 지붕을 다 마쳤단다."

My great-grandfather lived into his mid-90’s. Wade (his first name) was primarily a roofer and a part-time farmer. He loved to work hard and enjoy life. I remember when Great-Grandpa Boxx was 89 years old, he leaned over toward me and with a twinkle in his eye, whispered, “Don’t tell your parents, but I just finished roofing the church on the corner yesterday.”

그 나이에 그런 힘든 일을 맡는 사람이 얼마나 될까? 대부분의 사람들은 은퇴하여 더 이상 매일같이 일터로 나갈필요가 없는 날을 손꼽아 기다린다. 그러나 증조할아버지는 달랐다. 그분에게 일은 부담이 아니라 기쁨이었다. 일반적인 은퇴 연령을 훨씬 넘어서도 일은 여전히 소중한 삶의 일부였다.

Can you imagine many people at that stage of life taking on such an arduous project? To the contrary, many people speak often about how much they anticipate the day when they can retire, when they can cease the day-to-day grind of going to work. But not my great-grandfather. For him, work was a joyful pursuit; he regarded it as very important, even beyond the typical retirement age.

세계를 돌아보면 자신의 일에 온 마음을 다한 사람들의 놀라운 흔적을 쉽게 발견할 수 있다. 유럽의 웅장한 성당들, 중국의 만리장성, 인도의 타지마할, 그리고 두바이의 현대적인 초고층 건축물들이 그 예이다. 최근 미국은 건국 250주년을 맞이했는데, 수도 워싱턴 D.C.에 세워진 수많은 건축물 역시 수많은 사람들의 헌신과 성실한 수고를 증언하고 있다.

All around the world we can see awe-inspiring examples of people who threw themselves wholeheartedly into their work. There are the great and wondrous churches in Europe, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal in India, the modern towering architectural marvels of Dubai. The United States just celebrated the 250th anniversary of its founding, and numerous buildings in the capital city of Washington, D.C. attest to the hard work and dedication of many people.

수백 년 전 프랑스 파리에서 한 석공이 성벽의 작은 부분을 쌓고 있었다. 누군가 그에게 "무슨 일을 하고 있습니까?"라고 묻자, 그는 조금의 망설임도 없이 열정적으로 대답했다. "저는 성당을 짓고 있습니다!" 자신이 맡은 일은 전체 공사 중 아주 작은 부분에 불과했지만, 그는 그 일이 얼마나 중요한지 알고 있었다.

The story is told of a stonemason in Paris, France centuries ago, laboring on a small section of wall. Someone asked him, “What are you doing?” With great enthusiasm the worker responded without hesitation, “I’m building a cathedral!” His part might have been small, but he knew it was important.

우리 대부분은 수백 년 동안 남을 위대한 건축물을 세우는 일에 참여할 기회를 갖지 못할 것이다. 그러나 우리가어떤 일을 하든지 그 일 속에서 만족과 기쁨을 누릴 수는 있다.

Most of us will not have the opportunity to participate in constructing amazing landmarks that will last for centuries, but we all can draw satisfaction – and joy – from whatever form of work we perform.

솔로몬 왕은 인생의 대부분을 살아가며 온갖 즐거움과 오락, 그리고 야심찬 사업들을 경험했다. 그러나 그는 결국 그 모든 것이 "헛되다"(전도서 1:14)고 결론지었으며, 전도서 전체에서 이 표현을 반복해서 사용했다. 하지만그는 동시에 인생의 허무해 보이는 수고 가운데에도 하나님께서 주시는 분명한 의미가 있음을 깨닫게 되었다.

For much of his life, King Solomon had explored every type of pleasure, entertainment and ambitious project he could imagine. Ultimately, he concluded “all of them are meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 1:14), a phrase he repeated numerous times in that Old Testament book. However, the king had a revelation that showed him there is purpose in the midst of life’s seemingly futile pursuits.

솔로몬은 이렇게 기록했다. "그러므로 나는 사람이 자기 일에 즐거워하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 없음을 보았나니 이는 그것이 그의 몫이기 때문이라 아, 그의 뒤에 일어날 일이 무엇인지를 보게 하려고 그를 도로 데리고 올 자가 누구이랴"(전도서 3:22). 또한 그는 이렇게 권면한다. " 네 손이 일을 얻는 대로 힘을 다하여 할지어다 네가 장차 들어갈 스올에는 일도 없고 계획도 없고 지식도 없고 지혜도 없음이니라"(전도서 9:10).

Solomon wrote, “So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?” (Ecclesiastes 3:22). He also advised his readers, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

성경은 처음부터 일이 짐이나 벌이 아니라 하나님께서 인간에게 만족과 성취, 그리고 기쁨을 누리도록 허락하신선물이었다고 가르친다. 창세기의 창조 기사에서 하나님께서 아담과 하와에게 가장 먼저 주신 명령은 다음과 같다. " 하나님이 그들에게 복을 주시며 하나님이 그들에게 이르시되 생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라, 땅을 정복하라, 바다의 물고기와 하늘의 새와 땅에 움직이는 모든 생물을 다스리라 하시니라. 하나님이 이르시되 내가 온 지면의 씨 맺는 모든 채소와 씨 가진 열매 맺는 모든 나무를 너희에게 주노니 너희의 먹을 거리가 되리라. 또 땅의 모든 짐승과 하늘의 모든 새와 생명이 있어 땅에 기는 모든 것에게는 내가 모든 푸른 풀을 먹을 거리로 주노라 하시니 그대로 되니라"(창세기 1:28-30).

In the Bible we discover that rather than being a burden, from the beginning God intended for work to bring satisfaction, fulfillment – and joy. In the Genesis creation account, we find that His first command to Adam and Eve was to, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air…. I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food” (Genesis 1:28-30).

신학자들은 이를 '문화명령(Cultural Mandate)'이라고 부른다. 하나님께서 창조하신 세상을 돌보고 가꾸는 청지기이자 일꾼으로 사람을 세우셨다는 의미이다. 바로 그렇기 때문에 나의 증조할아버지처럼 "무엇이든 손에 잡히는 일을" 기쁨으로 감당하며 살아갈 수 있는 것이다.

Theologians called that the “cultural mandate,” God appointing the men and women He had created to serve as stewards – managers and workers – to cultivate and maintain all He had made. This is why people like my great-grandfather can find fulfillment in “whatever their hands find to do.”

Reflection/Discussion Questions

1. 출근할 때 은퇴에 대한 생각이 문득 떠오르기도 하나요? 혹시 은퇴하여 일상의 업무와 책임에서 해방될 그날까지 그저 버티기 위해 애쓰고 있지는 않나요? 그 이유를 설명해 보세요.

When you go to work, does retirement ever cross your mind? Are you merely striving to survive until the day you can retire and become freed from the daily demands and responsibilities of working? Explain your answer.

2. 현재 하고 있는 일이 이상적이지 않거나 ‘꿈의 직업’은 아니더라도, 그 일에서 보람이나 기쁨을 느끼게 해주는측면이 있나요? 어려운 시기에도 감사하게 생각하는 일에 관한 한두 가지를 떠올려 보세요. 무엇이 있나요?

Even if the job you currently have is not ideal, not your “dream job,” are there some aspects of it that bring you fulfillment, a sense of joy? Think of one or two things about your work for which you are thankful, even during times of difficulty. What are they?

Can you think of someone who truly enjoys the work that he or she does, and it is evident just by observing them and how they approach what they do? What can you learn from them in trying to find more enjoyment in your own work?

Imagine that the job or career you currently have is exactly where God wants you to be – at least for the time being. And He wants you to serve as His representative right there. Does that change your perspective on your work? Why or why not?

이번 한 주 동안 자신의 일과 그 일을 대하는 태도를 돌아보는 시간을 가져보십시오. 현재의 일을 생각할 때 부정적인 마음이 더 큰지, 아니면 진심으로 즐기며 감사하는 마음으로 일하고 있는지 스스로 점검해 보십시오.

Take some time this week to assess your work and your attitude toward it. Are your thoughts about it more negative than positive, or do you genuinely enjoy what you do?

만약 지금의 일에 대해 부정적인 생각이 많다면, 신뢰할 수 있는 친구나 멘토, 믿음의 조언자 또는 솔직하게 마음을 나눌 수 있는 소그룹과 그 고민을 함께 나누어 보십시오. 반대로 자신의 일에서 기쁨과 보람을 누리고 있다면, 현재 일로 인해 어려움을 겪고 있는 누군가의 이야기를 들어주고 격려하는 동역자가 되어 주십시오.

If you find your thoughts about your current job are primarily negative, share those feelings with a good friend, mentor, trusted advisor or a small group of people with whom you can speak honestly and in confidence. On the other hand, if you do find joy and fulfillment in your work, perhaps you can serve as a sounding board for someone who is struggling.
