A WORKING CAREER – TIME FOR MANY RELATIONSHIPS

어떤 사람들은 일하는 것을 너무 좋아해서, 해도 해도 또 더 하려고 한다. 그런 사람들은 일중독이라고 볼 수 있다. 또 어떤 사람들은 일을, 의식주를 해결하고 생활비 쓰고, 행복한 삶을 영위하기 위해 어쩔 수 없이 하는 필요악, 다시 말하면 먹고살기 위해 취한 수단이라고 여긴다. 그렇다면 당신은 혹시 일의 라이프타임에 대해 생각해 본 적이 있는가?

Work. Some people love it and can’t get enough of it. Many of those might qualify as workaholics. For others, work is a necessary evil, a means for putting food on the table, putting a roof over our heads, and providing clothing to wear, paying bills, and participating in pursuits that bring happiness. But have you ever considered what a lifetime of work looks like?

“우리의 평균 근무시간이 주 40시간”이라고 가정해 보자. 어떤 사람들은 이보다 더 많은 시간을 일하겠지만 여기서는 토론을 위해 40시간으로 잡아보겠다. 주 40시간은 달력 기준으로 볼 때 연간 약 2,000시간을 일하는 것이다. 그리고 한 사람이 45년을 산다고 가정할 때 한 직장을 꾸준히 다니건, 아니면 직장을 여러 군데 옮기건, 하물며 커리어를 변경했건, 총 근무시간은 90,000시간이다. 그것은 정말 긴 시간이다!

Let’s say we engage in a typical, “average” 40-hour work week. Some readers work many more hours than that, but let’s use 40 hours as our point of discussion. This means we will work approximately 2,000 hours over the course of a calendar year. Multiply that by the duration of one’s working life, let’s say 45 years. That amounts to 90,000 hours at work, whether you remain at one company or make multiple job and career changes. That is a lot of time!

여기서 우리가 스스로 해볼 수 있는 질문은 “그 긴 시간을 어떻게 보낼 것인가?” 하는 것이다. 특히 일할 때 고립된 환경에서 홀로 일하는 사람들이 거의 없다는 것을 감안할 때 이런 질문을 해보는 것이 필요하다. 거의 모든 사람이 다른 사람들과 함께 더불어 일하고, 매일 소통한다. 따라서 우리는 또 다른 질문, “나는 다른 사람들과의 관계에서 어떻게 처신해야 할까?” 하는 질문을 하게 된다.

A good question to ask ourselves is, “How will I spend that time?” Particularly considering that very few people work in isolation. Almost all of us work with other people and by necessity must interact with them daily. Which leads us to another question: “How should I deal with those relationships?”

이런 주제를 다루는 책들이 시중에 이미 나와 있지만, 여기서는 일을 어떻게 받아들이고, 또 나와 함께 일하는 사람들을 어떻게 받아들일 것인지에 대해 성경이 가르쳐주는 바를 살펴볼 것이다.

Books have been written on this topic, but it would be good to consider just a few of the many things the Bible has to say about how we are to approach our work, as well as the people we must work with:

일에 대한 우리의 태도가 좋은 본이 되어야 한다. 일을 받아들이는 태도 중에 어떤 것은 출근한 후, 맡은 일만 겨우 하면서 하루를 때우고, 퇴근 시간이 되면 집으로 가는 것이다. 그러나 이러한 태도는, “주를 위해서 일한다”(골로새서 3:23)은 믿음을 가진 우리로서는 다른 사람들에게 본이 될 만한 태도가 아니다. 그와는 반대로 우리는 일을 하나님의 거룩한 부르심이라고 받아들여야 한다. 우리를 어떤 곳으로 보내시든지 간의 말이다. “우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라” (에베소서 2:10)

Our work should set a positive example. One approach to work is to do the bare minimum required Go to work, get through the day, and go home. But that is hardly the example for others to emulate, especially for those of us who understand we are to work “as for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). To the contrary, we are to pursue our work – wherever God has placed us – as a sacred calling. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

일을 할 때 완벽히 해야 한다. 맡은 일을 엉망으로 처리하거나, 또는 윤리적으로 부적절하게 처신하거나, 또는 고객이나 거래처를 제대로 관리하지 못하거나, 동료들과의 불화, 회사의 생산성에 기여하지 못하는 문제 등으로 직장에서 신용을 잃는 사람들이 종종 있다. “또 너희에게 명한 것 같이 조용히 자기 일을 하고 너희 손으로 일하기를 힘쓰라 이는 외인에 대하여 단정히 행하고 또한 아무 궁핍함이 없게 하려 함이라” (데살로니가전서 4:11-12)

Our work should be above reproach. We all can probably think of some people who lost our respect in the workplace due to their unacceptable quality of work, unethical behavior, and general failure to make worthwhile contributions to our organization’s productivity and service to customers, suppliers, and their fellow workers. “And work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody” (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12).

 

우리는 노동윤리에서 좋은 본이 되어야 한다. 맡은 일을 성실하게 탁월하게 하는 자세는 자신의 성품을 드러내는 것이고, 또 타인에 대한 헌신을 보여주며, 무엇보다 무엇을 하든지 “그리스도의 대사”(고린도후서 5:20)로서 하려는 우리의 마음 자세를 보여준다. 자기 일에 자부심을 가지지 못하는 사람들이 점점 늘어나면서, 기업들은 일할 사람을 구하기가 힘들어지고 있다. 일을 하겠다는 사람들조차도 맡은 일에 집중하기보다, 다른 것들에 쉽게 집중력을 뺏긴다. “또 너희에게 명한 것 같이 조용히 자기 일을 하고 너희 손으로 일하기를 힘쓰라” (데살로니가전서 4:11)

Our work ethic should be exemplary. Diligence and excellence in the work we do speaks volumes about our character, commitment to others, and most important, our determination to serve as “Christ’s ambassadors” (2 Corinthians 5:20). Increasingly it seems people have failed to take pride in their work, as has been the experience of businesses that are struggling to find people willing to work. If they do show up for work, many seem easily distracted rather than focusing on their responsibilities. “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: you should mind your own business” (1 Thessalonians 4:11).

우리의 일은 다른 사람들을 향한 관심을 반영해야 한다. 우리가 맡은 일을 잘하기도 해야 하지만, 그 외에도 직장이 다른 사람들의 필요에 관심을 가지고 예수 그리스도의 사랑을 그들에게 보여주는 플렛폼의 역할을 할 수 있다. 만약 동료 직원이나 고객이 어려움을 겪고 있다면 그것이 하나님의 사랑과 긍휼을 나타낼 기회가 될 수도 있는 것이다. “네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라”(마가복음 12:31)

Our work should reflect concern for others. While fulfilling our job assignments and responsibilities, the workplace also can serve as a platform to reflect to others the love of Jesus Christ, showing we care about them and their needs. If we sense a coworker or customer is struggling, that may be an opportunity to show God’s concern and compassion. “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31).

How many hours do you work each week, on average? Projecting that over a lifetime of work, how many hours do you expect to spend pursuing your career? Do you think you have invested those hours well so far?

2. 먹고 살기 위해 돈을 버는 것, 그리고 경력을 잘 쌓아서 더 좋은 직장을 갖는 것 외에, 일과 관련된 당신의 삶이 주변에 어떤 바람직한 영향을 주고, 그리고 어떤 좋은 유산으로 남기를 바라나요?

Besides earning a livelihood financially and perhaps seeing your career advance through promotions or moving on to better opportunities, what do you hope will be the lasting impact or legacy of your working life?

Can you think of someone that you consider (or considered) to be a poor worker? If so, describe that individual and his or her approach to their job. Now, consider someone who impressed you as an outstanding worker. What was it about that individual that stood out for you?

이번 주에는 일에 대한 당신의 태도를 재평가해 보는 시간을 갖는 것이 좋을 것 같습니다. 만약 당신이 그리스도의 제자라면 그리고 당신이 일한 결과를 직접 그리스도에게 보고해야 할 입장이라면, 그리스도께서 당신의 일을 보고 어떻게 반응하실 것 같나요? 잠언 27:17은 “철이 철을 날카롭게 하는 것 같이 한 사람이 다른 사람을 날카롭게 한다”라고 말하고 있다. 당신은 필요할 때 격려해 주고, 기도해 주고, 건설적인 비판도 해주는 시림을 주기적으로 만나고 있나요? 만약 그렇다면 그 사람과 만나서 위에 나와 있는 질문들을 주제로 대화해보세요. 만약 당신이 믿고 대화할 만한 그런 대상이 없다면 그런 사람을 보내주시도록 하나님께 기도하세요.

This week would be a good time for you to re-evaluate your approach to work and your motivations for working. If you are a follower of Christ and you were to present the results of your efforts to Him directly, how do you think He would respond? Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Do you have someone you can meet with on a consistent basis for encouragement, prayerful support and constructive criticism if needed? If so, make an appointment to meet with that person and discuss the questions above. If you do not have someone to meet with that you can trust, ask God to lead you to such a person.
