A PERSONAL STORY OF TRANSFORMATION

Years ago, I worked with a professional engineer I will call Jim – a very religious man known for his stoic, professional demeanor. Initially wary of the beliefs of colleagues from different denominations, Jim found himself drawn into a discipleship relationship that would change his life forever.

나는 짐과 함께 매주 열리는 성경 중심의 토론 모임에 참석했고, 짐은 점점 마음을 열면서, 믿음이 성장했고, 세상을 보는 관점도 바뀌었다. 처음에는 성경 토론모임을 조심스럽게 두드려보는 정도였지만, 나중에는 기쁨, 성장, 그리스도를 향한 새로운 열정으로 가득 찬 생동감 넘치는 믿음의 여정을 누리게 되었다. 어느 날 점심 성경 공부를 위해 모였을 때, 항상 진지하고 전문 직업인처럼 행동하는 그가 마치 어린아이처럼 신이 나서 외쳤다. “나, 예수님에게 푹 빠져버린 것 같아!” 그 순간 나는 누가복음 24:45 말씀이 살아 역사하는 것을 보았다. “이에 그들의 마음을 열어 성경을 깨닫게 하시고”

Engaging in weekly lunchtime discussions with Jim, centered around the Bible, his heart softened, his faith deepened, and his perspective shifted. What began as cautious exploration blossomed into a vibrant journey of faith – marked by joy, growth, and a newfound passion for Christ. One day, as we gathered for our lunchtime study, the serious, ever-professional Jim exclaimed with childlike enthusiasm, "I think I'm becoming a Jesus freak!" In that moment, I saw Luke 24:45 come to life: "Then He [Jesus] opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures."

 

업무처리의 분주함. 사무실에 들어와 노트북을 열면서, 바로 우리는 비즈니스와 직장인이라는 삶의 급속한 흐름에 빨려 들어간다. 그러나 이러한 업무처리의 압박 속에서도 어떻게 선한 청지기가 되어 내게 주어진 시간을 활용해서, 회사나 고객이 맡긴 일들을 처리하는 것은 물론, 제자 사역이라는 성경적 부르심까지도 효과적으로 이행할 수 있을까?

The Distraction of Work. When we step into the office or open our laptops, our primary focus often revolves around navigating the rapid currents of our business and professional lives. But during the demands of our work, how can we effectively steward the time entrusted to us by our companies or clients, while also fulfilling our biblical calling to be disciplemakers?

마태복음 28:19-20에서 예수님은 우리의 궁극적인 사명, 즉 지상명령을 말하셨다. “그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 침례를 베풀고 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라 볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 하시니라” 이 명령은 목회자들이나 선교사들만 대상으로 삼는 것이 아니라, 직장에 있는 우리는 모두 물론 그리스도를 따르는 모든 자들을 대상으로 하는 것이다.

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus Christ lays out the ultimate mission, His Great Commission: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." This command is not just for pastors or missionaries; it is for every follower of Christ, including those of us in the workplace.

 

제자 양성의 힘. 제자를 삼는다는 것은 단순히 복음만 전하는 것이 아니라, 그 이상이다. 제자 훈련은 사람들을 신앙의 여정으로 인도하는 것이며, 삶의 모든 면에서 예수님을 따르도록 가르치는 것이다. 성공을 모든 것의 판단기준으로 삼고, 지표로 삼는 직장이라는 곳에서 제자 훈련은 관계, 성장, 소명에 뿌리는 두는 또 다른 패러다임을 제시해 준다.

The Power of Discipleship. Making disciples involves more than just communicating the Gospel; it is about guiding others in their journey of faith and teaching them to follow Jesus in every aspect of life. In the workplace, where success is often quantified by metrics and milestones, discipleship presents a different paradigm – one rooted in relationships, growth, and a higher calling.

리더 급에 있는 사람들이 그저 업무관리에만 신경 쓰지 않고, 사람에게 투자하는 그런 직장을 마음에 그려보라. 직장동료들이 승진에만 목을 거는 게 아니라 서로 협력하는 곳, 개인 성과만으로 성공을 평가하는 것이 아니라, 성장에 헌신한 공동체 전체의 변화를 보고 성공을 평가하는 그런 직장 말이다.

Picture a workplace where leaders do not just manage tasks but invest in people; where colleagues do not just vie for position but collaborate; and where success is not measured solely by individual achievements but by the collective transformation of a community committed to growth.

은혜로 장애를 극복하기. 제자 훈련의 부르심은 알지만, 이를 직장에서 실행하려고 하면 두려울 수가 있다. 선을 넘어야 하는 것에 대한 두려움, 문화적인 민감성을 건드릴 것에 대한 부담감이 어려움으로 다가올 수 있다. 그러나 하나님이 사람을 부르시면 친히 준비도 시켜 주신다는 믿음 안에 소망이 있다. 제자 훈련은 겸손 즉, 다시 말하면 배우고, 받아들이고, 성장하려는 의지에서 시작된다. 거기에는 또한 진정성이 인정받고, 연약함이 환영받으며, 관계가 우선시되는 환경이 필요하다.

Navigating Barriers with Grace. While the call to discipleship is clear, implementing it in the workplace can be daunting. Fears of overstepping boundaries and cultural sensitivities can pose challenges. Yet there is hope in the belief that where God calls, He equips. It starts with humility – willingness to learn, adapt, and grow. It involves environments where authenticity is prized, vulnerability welcomed, and relationships prioritized.

제자 관계 시작하기. 직장에서 제자 관계를 시작하려면 우정과 진심 어린 관심이라는 단순한 믿음의 행위가 필요하다. 커피 한잔하자고 초청하거나 점심을 함께 하자고 하거나, 함께 기도하자고 제안하거나, 성경 공부에 대한 공통의 관심사를 나누는 것부터 시작할 수 있다. 제자 훈련에 모든 답이 있는 것은 아니지만, 믿음 안에서 함께 동행하고, 함께 성장할 수 있다. 디모데후서 2:2는 이것을 잘 말해주고 있다. “또 네가 많은 증인 앞에서 내게 들은 바를 충성된 사람들에게 부탁하라 그들이 또 다른 사람들을 가르칠 수 있으리라”

Initiating a Discipleship Relationship. Initiating a discipleship relationship in the workplace requires a simple act of faith – a gesture of friendship and genuine care. It may start with an invitation to grab coffee or lunch, an offer to pray together, or a shared interest in studying Scripture. Discipleship isn't about having all the answers but about walking alongside one another in faith, learning, and growing together. We see this summed up in 2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.”

목표와 목적은 중요합니다. 기업의 수입과 최종이익도 마찬가지로 중요합니다. 우리는 생계를 유지할 만큼 벌어야 합니다. 그러나 사실 궁극적인 면에서 생각해 보면 업무 성취나, 우리가 연연하는 직함이 문제가 아니라 정말 중요한 것은 영향력을 끼치는 삶입니다. 다시 말하면 예수 그리스도를 위해 우리가 세상에 끼치는 영원한 영향입니다.

Goals and objectives are important. So are profits and the company’s bottom line. We need to earn a living. Ultimately, however, it is not solely about the tasks we accomplish or the titles we hold, but the lives we influence – the eternal impact we have for Jesus Christ.

리더로서 우리는 직장 내에서의 제자 훈련이 가진 삶을 변화시키는 힘에 대해 진지하게 생각해 봐야 합니다. 이번 주에는 주변 사람들이 하나님이 그들에게 주신 잠재력과 존재 목적을 발견하도록 어떻게 나의 시간과 에너지를 투자해서 그들을 도울지 생각해 보세요. 하나님이 당신을 마음이 열려 있는 사람들에게로 인도해 주셔서 그들을 예수 그리스도와 더 깊이 동행하는 삶의 여정으로 이끌 수 있도록 기도해 보세요.

As leaders, we should seriously consider the transformative power of workplace discipleship. Over the coming week, consider how you can start investing in the lives of those around you, helping them to discover their God-given potential and purpose. Pray that God will guide you to teachable people so you can assist them in their journey to a deeper, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.
