THE ART OF UNCONVENTIONAL LEADERSHIP

리더십. 통상적인 리더가 어떤 모습인지에 대해 수많은 의견이 있지만 수년간의 경험을 통해 내가 깨달은 바는, 믿음으로 사는 것을 중요하게 여긴다면 오늘날 비즈니스 시장에서 우리에게 필요한 것은 이례적인 리더십이다. 아래에는 이례적인 리더십에 대한 몇 가지 예가 나와 있다.

Leadership. There are many perspectives on what a conventional leader looks like, but years of experience have taught me that if we are serious about living out our faith in today’s marketplace, what is required is unconventional leadership. Here are some examples:

1) 이례적인 우선순위. 과거 상사가 어떤 고객에게서 돈을 더 많이 받아내려고 서류를 불법적으로 수정한 한 후에, 나에게 그 서류에 서명해달라고 요청한 적이 있었다. 나는 일자리를 잃을까 하는 두려움에 마지못해 상사의 요구를 받아들일지를 잠시 고민했다. 그러나 그 순간 하나님의 영이 나를 일깨워 하나님이 모든 것을 보고 계신다는 것과, 먼저 하나님께 충성해야 함을 깨닫게 해주셨다.

Unconventional priorities. A boss once asked me to sign off on certain legal documents that were illegally modified so our company could collect more money from a customer. For a moment, out of fear of losing my job, I begrudgingly accepted my boss’ demand. But then, God’s Spirit reminded me that He sees everything, and my loyalty should be to God first.

그래서 나는 상사에게 일자리를 잃는 한이 있더라도 그의 요청을 들어줄 수는 없다고 말했다. 상사는 좋아하지는 않았지만 그래도 나의 입장을 존중했고, 다시는 나에게 비윤리적인 일을 시키지 않았다.

Even at the risk of losing my job, I told my boss I would not honor his request. He was not happy but respected my stand and never asked me to do anything unethical again.

이례적인 리더는 하나님께 먼저 충성할 때 하나님의 은혜와 지혜를 얻게 된다는 것을 배우고 또 믿는다. 잠언 21:21은 “공의와 인자를 따라 구하는 자는 생명과 공의와 영광을 얻느니라”라고 가르치고 있다.

An Unconventional Leader learns and believes that loyalty to God first, can result in God’s favor and wisdom. Proverbs 21:21 teaches, “One who pursues righteousness and loyalty finds life, righteousness, and honor.”

2) 이례적인 존중. 직장 내에서는 갈등이 있을 수밖에 없다. 나는 갈등을 해결하기 위해 리더들이 다른 사람들에게 화를 내는 직장에도 다녀본 적이 있고, 반면에 어떤 리더들은 감정을 솔직하게 표현하지 않고 소극적인 공격성을 보이는 그런 직장에도 다녀본 적이 있다. 물론 나는 갈등을 잘 해결하는 그런 리더들도 겪어보았다. 그것은 대개 그들의 사고방식과 겸손한 마음에서 출발했다.

Unconventional respect. In the workplace conflict is inevitable. I have worked in places where leaders raged in anger at others to handle conflict, while others became passive aggressive, never sharing their feelings truthfully. But I have also experienced leaders who have handled conflict well. It usually begins with their mindset and humble heart.

이들 능력 있는 리더들은 먼저 관련 당사자들을 귀하게 여기고, 감사하며, 존중하는 마음으로 그들을 대하는 것부터 시작한다. 그런 다음에는 어떤 사실을 공유할 것인지를 결정한다. 마지막으로 그 사실을 어떻게 명확하게 그리면서도 사랑으로 전달할지를 결정한다.

These talented leaders begin with the desire to value, appreciate, and respect the other parties involved, first. Then, these leaders determine what truths need to be shared. Finally, they consider how to deliver that truth clearly, but in love.

이례적인 리더는 진리와 사랑 안에서 다른 사람들에게 감사하고 그들을 존중하면 더 큰 영향을 줄 수 있다고 믿는다. 에베소서 4:15에서 사도 바울은 “오직 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하여 범사에 그에게까지 자랄지라 그는 머리니 곧 그리스도라”라고 가르치고 있다.

An Unconventional Leader believes appreciating and respecting others in truth and love delivers a greater impact. In Ephesians 4:15, the apostle Paul wrote, “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”

3) 이례적인 목적. 기업가들에게 왜 사업을 시작했는지 물어보면 대부분 돈을 벌기 위해서라고 말할 것이다. 그러나 라이언 피(Ryan Fee)가 카멜 컬처(Calmel Culture)를 시작했던 이유는 달랐다. 그와 그의 아내는 난민 정착촌에서 자원봉사를 하던 중 소말리아 난민촌의 난민들이 고향을 떠올리며 가장 그리워하는 것이 낙타와 낙타 젖이라는 것을 알게 되었다. 그 난민들에 대한 긍휼함 때문에 부부는 그들에게 낙타 젖을 판매하는 사업을 시작했다. 그리고 피(Fee) 부부는 낙타 젖에 대한 수요가 엄청난 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다.

Unconventional purpose. When you ask entrepreneurs why they started their businesses, most will say it was to make money. That’s not why Ryan Fee started Camel Culture. While volunteering at a refugee settlement, he and his wife learned what Somali refugees miss the most about their homeland are their camels and their camel’s milk. Out of compassion for these refugees, the Fees started a business of selling camel’s milk to them. The Fees were surprised by the great demand for their product.

이례적인 리더는 더 고결한 목적을 가지고 비즈니스를 하다 보면 단지 이익을 내는 것을 넘어서서 훨씬 더 놀라운 결과를 가져온다고 믿는다. “그런즉 너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라” (마태복음 6:33)

An Unconventional Leader believes that approaching business with a higher purpose in mind results in far more than just profits. Jesus Christ taught, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

다른 예시들도 있다. 그 예시 중에는 자신의 영적 신념 때문에 큰 반대에 부딪히는 예도 있다. 이들 이례적인 지도자들은 부패하고 비도덕적인 세상에 맞서려면 결단력과 용기 그리고 높은 도덕성이 필요하다고 믿는다. 그들은 잠언 10:9이 “바른 길로 행하는 자는 걸음이 평안하려니와 굽은 길로 행하는 자는 드러나리라”라고 가르치는 바를 이해한다.

There are other examples I could cite, including people who have endured great opposition due to their spiritual convictions. These Unconventional Leaders believe resolve, courage, and a high view of ethics are required to stand against a corrupt and immoral world. They understand what Proverbs 10:9 teaches: “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked with be found out.”

In the next part of that verse, Jesus Christ said, “and all these things will be added to you.” Does this mean if we hold unwavering to biblical principles, success is guaranteed? Why or why not?

This week might be a good time for some personal soul-searching. Can you think of a time – or times – when you took a stand for what you knew was right, even knowing you might face negative ramifications as a result?

It is said it is best to determine in advance how to respond when confronted with a compromising situation, rather than waiting until a crisis arises and then deciding what to do. Set aside some time this week to meet and pray with a trusted friend (or friends) for the courage to remain true to your faith and biblical principles when difficult circumstances arise.
